Gasholders

Optimal method of biogas storage depends on it’s utilization. If biogas is directly burned in burners and engines, then big gas holders are not necessary. In these cases gas holders are used for equalizing gas pressure and improving the conditions for burning.

In small-sized biogas plats big car or tractor tubes can be used, but it is more common to use plastic or steel gas holders.

Sizing the gas holder
The size of a gas holder or its volume depends on the biogas production and consumption levels. Ideally, gas holder should hold daily volume of produced biogas. Depending on type of the gas holder and the pressure it can bear the volume is normally kept in range of 1/5 to 1/3 from digester volume.

Plastic gas holders
Gas-holders made of plastic sheeting or rubber are commonly used in developed countries for collection of biogas in integrated plants, where plastic covers open digester tank. Alternatively, there can be separate plastic gas holder.

Steel gas holders
Differentiation is made between:
low-pressure, wet and dry gas-holders (10-50 mbar).
Basically, these gas-holders are identical to integrated and/or plastic (sheet) gas-holders. Separate gas-holders cost more and are only worthwhile in case of substantial distances (at least 50-100 m) or to allow repair of a leaky fixed-dome plant. This type of separate gas-holder is also
used to buffer extreme differences between gas-production and gas-use patterns.
medium- or high-pressure gas-holders (8-10 bar / 200 bar)
Gas is pumped into such gas holders with compressors. Gas holders of medium pressure are used in Kyrgyzstan in medium and large-sized biogas plants. High-pressure gas holders are used for fueling cars and balloons.

Monitoring equipment
Monitoring equipment installed on gas holder include: water trap, safety valve, manometer and gas reducer. Steel gas holders have to be grounded.
